Mr Piet Haers

Piet Eduard J. J. Haers is currently Clinical Director and Cleft Surgeon of the South-Thames Cleft Team at Guy’s Hospital in London and Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. He was Honorary Visiting Dr at the Postgraduate Medical School of the University of Surrey until 2014. He is since 2005 faculty member of the Specialist Dental Diploma Course of the FGDP of the Royal College of Surgeons.

He studied medicine and dentistry in Namur and Leuven, Belgium and trained in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Bruges in Belgium, Arnhem in the Netherlands and Zurich in Switzerland. Between 1992 and 1999 he was member of staff of the Department of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital of Zurich. In Zurich he wrote his theses in medicine (Dr. med), Dentistry (Dr. med. Dent.) and his habilitation thesis (equivalent to PhD). His main surgical interests are facial deformity with cleft lip and palate surgery, orthognathic surgery and facial plastic surgery as well as pre-implant surgery, dental implants and oro-facial rehabilitation. His main research interests are 3D imaging and the application of biodegradable materials in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

He is a member of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a Fellow of the European Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Elected Fellow of the International Academy of Oral and Facial Rehabilitation, which concentrates on comprehensive dental implant treatment in complex conditions requiring additional pre-implant surgery, reconstructive surgery and / or orthognathic surgery.  He is member of the ITI implant study group and organises and participates regularly in local, national and international pre-implant and dental implant surgery workshops.

Mr Haers was Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1999 – 2011) and member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was elected as President-Elect of IAOMS in November 2011 and is President in 2014 – 2015.

He received a FDS RCS ad eundem in 1999 and FGDP RCS in 2010. He was elected as fellow of the International College of Dentists in 2002. He was elected as fellow of the German Academy of Science Leopoldina in 2005.
